Phase: In Consequence Album Review

A couple of weeks back I was contacted by Phase’ Thanos Grigoriou through my personal FB page, and we got on talking about this and that. As the Conversation went on, he asked me if I was up for doing a review of some of Phase’ music and I said Yeah, and he sent me the link to the bands Bandcamp page. This is a review of In Consequence, this is the first album of 4 that they have produced.

Phase are a band from Newcastle – Upon – Tyne, UK, They formed in 2003 and in that time, they have amassed over 56k likes on their Facebook page.

As I was listening to this album, I could hear a good few influences from Depeche Mode, Massive Attack and Placebo just to name but a few.

The first track off the album is Inside, this 1 minute 6 second intro, is a song that can only be described as hypnotic and sets the album up to be a blinder. The next song The Smile, at the beginning of the song it does remind me of EDM with the synths, but goes into some sweet dirty guitars, plus this track has some heavy synths in parts, which gives the overall sound of the track that richer feeling.

Perdition is the third track, and on this track the synths are more prevalent and the guitars have sort of taken a back seat, but it is a brilliant track, this track reminds me of a slowed down of a Crossfaith song. The fourth track is Transcendence and is an acoustic song with some electric thrown in to enhance the overall feel. This has a prog rock vibe to the song which will appeal to the fans of that genre.

Ibidem is a prog rock song that has a psychedelic undertone to it and is a pretty decent track. Evening On My Dark Hillside is up next, this track has a folk feel to the sound and this is an instrumental piece that I can quite happily listen to this on a regular basis.

Hypoxia is a really good song, it has that guitar sound that will bury itself in your subconscious, and make you want to the song over and over again. A Void is an acoustic track on the whole, I can see this being on a soundtrack to a horror film, as it has that haunting quality to it.

Static, this is a strange track, but in a good way, this song reminds me for some reason of The Doors or several Psychedelic bands from the the late 60’s in it composition and arrangement, this is a really cool song and I could play this on a regular basis. Next Illusion Of Fate, Thanos Grigoriou’ vocals on this song definitely reminds me of Jim Morrison of The Doors fame, and this song, has that same vibe as the previous Static, and overall this song is pretty good.

Well as I have listened to this album a good few times (like I always do), I will be coming back to Phase to listen to their other three albums, to see what they are like.

I would definitely give this album In Consequence a 4 out of 5 as this is a good psychedelic rock album, which I haven’t listened to a decent one (apart from a few exceptions) in years.
