Over the last few days, I have been listening to Punishment’s album Remnants of Things Left Unsaid. If you are a fan of Southern and Hard Rock mix with a modern twist, you’re going to like this.
Punishment are a Canadian band set up by Guitarist/songwriter Kevin Gale (formerly of Slik Toxik), back in 2008. Gale put together the band with Brad Searl on Lead Vocals, Mark Johnston on Bass and Pat Carrano on Drums.
As Gale was writing this album he drew upon on a lot of styles of Rock and Metal, such as Blues Hard Rock of Led Zeppelin, the Grunge Rock of Alice In Chains and a lot of Southern Rock.
A Little Dodgy is a good opener for the album, it has a lot of elements of rock, as it has grunge, hard rock, some southern rock and a nice healthy dose of the Blues which will get any music lover saying Damn,
Cocaine is up next, if you like the blues driven riff, you’ll like this. This track has some really good drums and Searl has a real presence on this song. Little Sister has some sweet guitars and cool singing from Searl. Mason Jar is next, and this track is more acoustic in its arrangement and is a really good chill out song.
Mountain is a really good song, as it has that Southern Rock vibe going on Searl is again brilliant this and the drummer is superb and Gale is excellent. Once We Were Gods follows on from Mountain in the same style and again they have done a really brilliant job of this track(s) as they are well written and performed by the band.
Southernbound is a really good track, as it has some really good guitars from Gale. As I listen to this track it has really started to grow on me, as it has some sweet riffs on it. The Bridge is up next and it has more a bass driven vibe to it, and I think that this sounds very similar to The Doors which is pretty awesome.
Too Far Gone is the last song on the album. This track has definitely got that Bluesy Southern Rock vibe to it and Searl has really got the voice for the Southern Rock genre and with the band that is behind him that Gale has put together, It has made this track and the album that has made this an enjoyable experience to listen to Remnants of Things Left Unsaid.
I would definitely give Punishment and the album a 4.5 out of 5 as this album is a really enjoyable album.
