Inkubus Sukkubus: Barrow Wake Album Review

Over the years that I have been following the Inkies, they have become more than just a brilliant Pagan/Goth Rock band from Gloucester UK, they have saved not just me from going down really dark paths of insanity, depression etc but others people as well, they are Beacons of light and love to a lot of people and they show those people back to the right path, ever since they started the band in 1989. For this reason, it is why I totally love this band, as they do help a lot of people with their wonderful music.

Their 20th studio album Barrow Wake Is out on the 20th of June 2016 and they are taking pre orders on their website http://www.inkubussukkubus.com.

The Enchanted Realm is the first track off the album and it is very haunting and atmospheric and you could lost in Candia’s vocals. The next song is Woman To Hare (Daemon Romantica Mix), this song is very Inkies, with orchestral arrangement of the cellos and the kettle drums, this has to be one of my favourites off this album. The lyrics, music and subject matter works perfectly for this tracks.

Lost To The Sea follows on from Woman to Hare with the orchestral arrangement but with more acoustic guitar in the mix, and the way that Candia delivers the vocals on this track is sublime, she is one hell of a singer.

Lily Bolane is one of my all time favourites, Lily Bolane is constantly being played on my playlist. It has a splendid mix of electric guitars, church organs, string arrangements and a thunderous bass line from the bass guitar and drums. On this song Candia shows off her prowess of doing an excellent fast tempo rock song.

Hopkins Man is about the Devil and in this case Matthew Hopkins, The Witchfinder General, he who is abroad the land and tormenting the locals, and it is a woman who can stop him. The music is very haunting with the string instruments and the vocals are well suited for this track.

Forest Hill and Corn King is off the Queen Of Heaven, Queen Of Hell album. These songs do fit perfectly on this album as it in the same vain as the rest of the album. Corn King is a remix, this song is and acoustic version with Candia on the Bodhran. and is a brilliant version.

Barrow Wake is the title track off this album. After reading the lyrics and listening to this song, it is very poignant, its about a relationship being stale to the point where the husband goes off and has an affair, and the wife either is blind or chooses not to see it. This song is set to an acoustic setting as it sets a mournful tone to the track.

The Witch Of Berkeley (Daemon Romantica Mix) this dark and brooding track is off the Vampyre Erotica album, and has been remixed for this album. The music has got cellos, campanology and some sweet violins, all coupled with some brilliant drums and all tied together with Candia’s classy vocals.

Death And The Virgin this re-imagined version of this track (originally off the Wild album) has more drums and bass line and brilliant acoustic guitar accompaniment as it does drive the song forward, and Candia’s vocals are subtle and and strong at the same time. The lyrics to this songs is about a young woman who wants to be taken when she is in her prime and she doesn’t want to wait when she is older and dry.

The Rape Of Maude Bowen, I am glad that the Inkies decided to include this track on this album as it is a timeless classic Inkubus Sukkubus song.

Dark Mother (Spook Mix) this remix version of this song is so beautifully done, as it has been rearranged to be a slower version than the Wytches album version. With the accompaniment of the Harp, the acoustic guitar and the haunting melodies of Candia, this has to be one of the best reworkings of a song that is truly hauntingly spooky song.

The Campden Wonder is the last track on this album and has been mastered by Dave Saunders the bassist of the Inkies. This track starts off with a tolling bell and then goes into a rock song about murder and greed, only Inkubus Sukkubus can pull off this masterful song, as it has a brilliant  bass line done by Dave, Tony’s guitars are awesome as he pulls off some really nice riffs, and Candia’s vocals mesh it all together for a stunning track.

Over the last few days, since I got this album, it hasn’t really been off my media player, as I have listened to it good few times. The only way I can describe this album is Absolutely Awesome.

I would give the Inkies a 5 out of 5 for this album, I can’t bang on about this band enough, as they are brilliant.
